Abergavenny is known as the "Gateway to Wales," making it a popular destination for visitors with an interest in both Welsh and British history. Once a Roman fort, before becoming a medieval walled town, much of the architecture reflects centuries past. Many artefacts and relics can be seen on a visit to Abergavenny Castle. This ruined Norman castle, built in 1087, has been the sight of many a bloody battle, but now the site is home to a museum. As well as ancient treasures, it showcases contemporary art from local craftspeople.
For breath taking natural beauty, head for the Black Mountains of Wales, with the Skirrid located northeast of Abergavenny, and its parent peak, the Sugar Loaf, nearby. This volcano-shaped mountain, dramatic against the skyline, has, in its foothills, a successful vineyard - stop off for a wine tasting, and rest your legs.
For shopaholics, Abergavenny has all the high street names, and a mix of quirky boutiques full of handmade goodies, such as chunky knits, jewellery, and studio glassware. If you’re after culture, you’ll find it at the stylish Borough Theatre, home to an eclectic programme of performances, from ballet to jazz, there’s something to suit every taste.
