With the ancient St Cybi’s Church at its heart, the town is protected from the elements by the well-preserved walls of one of the largest Roman Forts in Wales. The whole area boasts of a rich past with many important archaeological finds including the Mountain Hut Circles. These are part of a prehistoric site and would have originally served as homes, workshops and spiritual buildings. Great fun for adults and children alike, and experiencing this type of living history ensures its survival for future generations.

Nearby, the South Stack Lighthouse rises 91 feet into the sky, offering jaw-dropping views of the dramatic rocky cliffs. Only reachable via steep, rough-hewn steps and a narrow bridge, this Victorian lookout is still in use today, while the nearby South Stack Cliffs RSPB nature reserve is home to the rarely seen chough, puffins and razorbills. Continuing the outdoor theme, at Breakwater Country Park, created on the site of an old mine and opened in 1990, you can spot peregrine falcons hunting through the gorse, and regularly see guillemots and waterfowl on the many lakes and rocky outcrops. The whole family will enjoy a wide choice of walks, ranging in difficulty, and spanning a large area, including Holyhead Mountain and South Stack, before indulging in an ice cream at the kiosk.
