On the coast of Anglesey, sited on its own little island of Holy Island, lies Holyhead. Accessible via the Stanley Embankment, the whole area is steeped in history, with the relics of Roman forts, impressive standing stones and atmospheric burial chambers scattered across the islands. With many of the friendly local speaking Welsh, this stunning part of the country is a must-visit for anyone.

Silhouetted against the sky, the South Stack Lighthouse offers jaw-dropping panoramic views. Built in the early 1800s to warn ships off the rugged and dangerous rocks below, it’s said to be haunted, with wails and moans heard regularly as visitors climb up to the very top.

At the heart of the town lies St. Cybi’s Church. Built within the walls of an ancient Roman fort, which can be seen today, still offering protection to the church from invading armies - luckily, not so much of a problem these days!
Walk through this rugged and untamed landscape, with its Celtic legends, rich history and tranquil, contented atmosphere, and you can’t help but be moved by the sudden appearance of the Holyhead Mountain Hut Circles. One of the most important archaeological sites in Wales, the remains of over twenty prehistoric circular huts can be seen here. Once they would have had thatch covered conical roofs, and been used for a number of purposes, such as homes, storerooms or workshops. This site is well worth a visit.

For a culture fix, the Ucheldre Centre has a year round programme of performances -  opera pantomime, live music or modern dance, whatever your taste, there will be something to suit. The gift shop showcases local crafts and talents, and is the perfect place to pick up a gift or two, while the cafe serves delicious homemade cakes.
