Cwmbran was created as a New Town in 1949, providing housing, facilities and employment opportunities for the South Wales Coalfield region. However, the area is rich in archaeological finds, with Bronze and Iron Age artefacts being found, and nearby Usk is known for having a Roman stronghold. In the 12th century, a Cistercian abbey was founded, but as a victim of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, it soon passed into private hands, and is now home to the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy Order, and has been since 1946.
