Cwmbran was created as a New Town in 1949, providing housing, facilities and employment opportunities for the South Wales Coalfield region. However, the area is rich in archaeological finds, with Bronze and Iron Age artefacts being found, and nearby Usk is known for having a Roman stronghold. In the 12th century, a Cistercian abbey was founded, but as a victim of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, it soon passed into private hands, and is now home to the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy Order, and has been since 1946.
The Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre holds several collections of Neolithic artefacts and Roman relics, as well as some impressive local arts and crafts. There is a year-round programme of events and exhibitions held in this gorgeous Victorian manor house, with numerous workshops and demonstrations for visitors to get involved with. Pop along and have a go!
The popular Cistercian Way runs right past the town. A daunting 650-mile circular route, taking in many of the landmarks of Wales, including Neath and Tintern Abbeys. If you have a well behaved canine companion who loves walking, and what dog doesn’t, bring him along for a day of excitement and doggy adventure on trails that run through some of the most glorious countryside in the UK.
Continuing the nature theme, head to Greenmeadow Community Farm for a cuteness overload - bouncy baby goats and lambs, squealing piglets, beautiful calves, and miniature ponies, jump on the tractor to visit them all. There are also plenty of small furries to play with - gerbils, rabbits and gorgeously soft chinchillas. If you’re lucky, the deer will say hello, and you can feed carrots and hay to the friendly donkeys. Their locally produced treats are perfect for snacking on the journey home.
