Designed as a new town in the 1940s, Cwmbran improved the coalfield region of South Wales by increasing the employment opportunities and, subsequently, providing more houses. It is known, however, that people have lived in this region for much longer. A Roman fort existed in the nearby town of Usk, and archaeological digs have unearthed hundreds of artefacts, many dating back to Bronze and Iron Age settlements located in the region. Many of these finds are housed in the local museum. Llanyrafon Manor offers a chance to get up close and personal with our ancestors via the artefacts they left behind. From everyday objects, burial goods and weapons, we can understand what life was like all those centuries ago. More Neolithic and Roma relics can be found at the Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, which also offers cultural experiences in the form of live performances, art exhibitions and workshops that are open to all.
If you’re seeking the thrill of retail, head for the Cwmbran Centre. Here, all the big names of the high street are under one very large roof, including department stores, specialist shops and designer boutiques. But for something a little more salubrious, look out for the independent stores and emporiums. Showcasing local handcrafts, and offering beautifully unique gifts, these secret gems are perfect for treating yourself to something special, such as gorgeous handmade knits, jewellery, or even some delicious artisan shortbreads.
If you and your dog are inseparable, bring him along on the train and treat him to a stroll along the glorious Cistercian Way that runs right past Cwmbran. Although the full circuit is around 650 miles, shorter, more manageable way-marked sections are easily accessible from the town and make the perfect end to your day.
Relax on the train home, sinking into the sumptuous seats, while a happy Rover - if you brought him along, rests peacefully at your feet. Download our mobile app, providing access to the latest timetables and all of our special offers and discounted fares, to make planning a day out even easier.
