Bangor is the oldest city in Wales, but being so small, has an intimate, friendly atmosphere. Founded as a monastic settlement in the 6th century, it’s now a vibrant cosmopolitan place, ideal for a day trip, and perfect for a base if you wish to scale the heights of nearby Mount Yr Wyddfa.
For those planning on climbing the 3,560 feet giant, there are several routes to the summit, some more arduous than others, so it’s wise to do your homework and go prepared to do some serious walking. However, the view from the top is well worth it, and the kudos of scaling the highest mountain in Wales is second to none! If you’re a keen cyclist, why not bring your bike with you and explore further afield, such as the Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve, a place renowned for its natural beauty.
Other than the dramatic beauty of Yr Wyddfa, Bangor’s most notable landmark is Penrhyn Castle, a 19th-century neo-Norman castle built for Queen Victoria. This stunning neo-Norman castle is renowned for its opulent plasterwork, and carvings, but the grounds, too, are well worth seeing. The glorious fuschia-arched walkway, fields of spring daffodils, and the classical formal fountain garden are such to leave a lasting impression.
Bangor Cathedral is the main church in the city, featuring magnificent wood carvings and gorgeous stained glass windows. It dates all the way back to the 6th century and is dedicated to its founder, Saint Deiniol.
Stretching over the sea for 1500ft, a stroll along the pier is the perfect way to end your day. The panoramic view over the Menai Straits stretches from Eryri to the Isle of Anglesey. With cafes serving locally caught mussels, grab a bite to eat before catching the train home.
