The town’s name is literally holy well, and takes its name from St Winefriede’s Well, which is a Grade 1 listed building and is claimed to be the oldest visited pilgrimage site in Great Britain. A popular walking location, the North Wales Pilgrims Way begins at Basingwerk Abbey, near to the town.
