Context and challenges
Around 400,000 passengers per year pass through Llandudno Railway Station passengers per year. With our intended improvements to the connection times from Llandudno Junction, we expect to see these numbers increase in the near future.
Currently, the majority of people accessing the station do so via active travel modes (71%).1 However, there are critical design features on the routes surrounding the station that limit people’s ability to walk, wheel or cycle to and from the station.
Design approach
TfW collaborated with Conwy County Borough Council on the initial stages (TfW Plan of Works Stage A & B) on the prioritisation of routes for improvement connecting to and from Llandudno railway station, for which Conwy have proceeded with a section to site, and TfW and Conwy development of a section to preliminary design.
Partnerships and engagement
Through the development, Conwy County Borough Council and TfW have been working closely with key stakeholders and representatives of those along the route. Conwy County Borough Council commissioned Pell Frischmann for the design of the first section. Through TfW’s procurement frameworks, we were able to commission ARUP to support on the design stage. This sharing of responsibilities allowed for officers’ time (from both organisations) to be better allocated to suit the project’s aims.
Impact
This collaboration enabled Conwy County Borough Council officers to find funding for a route prioritised both as part of their Active Travel Network Map aspirations, by showing that it had additional benefits as a route to and from the station. The onward route (designed to preliminary stage) will also see the route connect to the wider Mor i’r Mynydd Conwy Valley route in development so that the town centre benefits. TfW are hoping to increase the train service frequency to and from Llandudno in the near future. Having a suitable connecting route is key to the viability of this increase in service provision to the town.
