Eisteddfod 2026

At Transport for Wales, we take pride in connecting you to the heart of Welsh culture, and there is no event more central to our identity than the Eisteddfod. This nomadic festival is a massive celebration of the Welsh language, music, and arts, welcoming everyone from fluent speakers to those who have never heard a word of Cymraeg.

Choosing to travel by train is one of the most sustainable and stress-free ways to join the festivities, allowing you to avoid the congestion and parking challenges that come with such a popular event.

We’re working closely with key partners to help you travel easily and sustainably to and from the Maes. Full details will be confirmed soon. Please check back here for updates.

The National Eisteddfod

The National Eisteddfod is the pinnacle of the Welsh cultural calendar. It’s a truly unique event that moves between north and south Wales each year, transforming land into a vibrant village of song, dance, and literature.

Attracting up to 170,000 visitors annually, it’s one of Europe’s largest music and poetry festivals - a vibrant moveable feast that celebrates all things Cymraeg.

Whether you’re there to witness the prestigious chairing of the bard or simply to enjoy contemporary music and visual arts, the atmosphere is electric. Don't worry if you aren't a Welsh speaker; the festival is incredibly inclusive and even offers on-site language lessons to get you started.

What to expect on the Maes

The festival site, known as the Maes, is a bustling village of pavilions and stages. While steeped in tradition dating back to 1176, today’s Eisteddfod is a 21st-century celebration that blends ancient ceremonies with cutting-edge contemporary culture.

  • The Pavilion: The focal point for major competitions in music, dance, and drama. After dark, it transforms into a venue for star-studded concerts, cabaret, and orchestral pop.
  • Gorsedd of the Bards: Spectacular ceremonies where the Gorsedd in their white, blue and green robes according to their specialism are led by the Archdruid. You can witness the iconic Crowning and Chairing of the Bard, honouring the Wales’s best poets.
  • Y Lle Celf: A national celebration of visual arts and architecture, featuring exhibitions from Wales' leading contemporary artists.
  • Science and Technology Village: A hub of interactive experiments and demonstrations designed to entertain and educate curious minds.
  • Maes B: Thelittle brother of the festival after dark, featuring late-night gigs from the best Welsh pop, rock, and indie bands.
  • Maes D: Dedicated to Welsh learners (Dysgwyr), this area offers a friendly space to practice phrases and chat with experts.

When: This massive, nomadic celebration of Welsh culture is traditionally held during the first week of August. The 2026 event, Eisteddfod y Garreg Las, will take place in North Pembrokeshire from Saturday 01 August 2026 - Saturday 08 August 2026.
